Fall Photos

FL was our Scientist of the Week.  She taught us about ooze

We had a great Fireman come out and try on his gear.  He even let the kids help him with some stuff. Then, we took a walk to the firehouse at Jefferson Park.

October Catch Up

We just finish our 41st day of school.  Can you believe that? Everyday we work on the smartboard and work on sentences, counting and calendar.  Many children can tell you how to spell "Today is..." and then how to end a sentence.  They are learning when you use a period vs. exclamation point.
It is pretty exciting.  This week we added rhyming words into our daily routine.  Make it a game; give them a starting word such as cat, log, hop and see what they come up with.  Nonsense words are ok.  It is about hearing the end sound similarities and differences.

In Math we are working on new colors: yellow, black and orange.  We also will be working on patterns.  The patterns will be simple at first abab, and we will differentiate with those who are ready to move on to abcabc and aabaab etc.

Science and Social Studies has been filled with talks of different countries and nocturnal animals.  If you have a map or globe at home, keep it out for them to explore.  We talked about Mexico and Russia this week.  I would love them to be able to show you that at home.

In Religion we have been talking about God's beautiful creations.  We talk about the importance of keeping these creations safe and well taken care of.  They came up with great suggestions for doing just that.  Ask them something they can do to take care of God's creation.

Our Artist this month was Wassily Kandinsky.  He was an abstract artist.  We focused on his painting called Concentric Circles because we have been doing a lot with squares and circles.  Their work turned out amazing!

Have they talked to you yet about yoga? They LOVE it.  I am amazed by how well some of the children are really able to focus and keep going through the poses.

Finally, as the weather is changing, please be mindful to dress the children for the weather. If they are not dressed for the weather, they will have to stay in for recess.   Please label hats too.

Peace!

Happy October!

I wanted to share some apps we have been using in our Ipad Lab experience days.  The focus has primarily been on Math, so if you have an ipad or similar, try to see about using these at home.

Pattern Blocks
Little Writer
Hungry Fish
seussville  (on the Smartboard) doing shape games

This week we finish up our unit on The 3 Bears.  We have focused a lot of time on sizing big, medium and small along with the color blue.  We started sound discrimination and talking about same and different.  A cool thing to do is to put different, but similar items out and ask how they are the same and how they are different.  This is better than any other worksheet!

We have been counting and writing numbers 1-5.  This is differentiated in the afternoon based on your child's skill level.  If they can count and write the numbers, we are learning to write the words one-five along with the color words. If you want to practice at home, give them a die and have them roll then write.  They love that!

In Religion we have been discussing ways to be kind.  Their homework has been to practice kindness at home and share different things with me the next day.  They really love to hug and kiss their parents!

We had a second scientist who taught us about vibrations using a yogurt cup ear phone! Photos coming soon.  We started talking about corn this week along with the farming and usage aspects .  Next week we will move on to Nocturnal animals.  Please be sure to ask them about things they are learning.  They really are retaining.  I love hearing them tell me that their apples are brown because of oxadation (oxidation) lol.  They get it!

Finally, Please be sure to hand in the new field trip form for Sonny Acres coming up on Oct. 23.  We do need chaperones, so indicate that on the trip as well.  We have 2 buses, so we can accommodate many.

I will post some new photos in the next couple of days.  I hope you all enjoy the new crisp sunshiney weather we are experiencing.

Until next time....
