So much to do and so little time to do it!

Thanks for the well wishes while I was out sick! YIKES it was bad. The kids did great with the subs. I am back and we are in full swing with these next 2 short weeks.

Thanks to all the parents and grownups that helped to make International Week great even though I was out.  The children "traveled" around the world to Ireland, Poland, Mexico, China, Spain and Italy.  They had treats and saw some really great photos and other items from the countries!

Starting this week and each Monday for the rest of the year, we will be doing a GREAT ARTIST Program.  I will introduce and artist and give some background on that artist, show some images etc.  Then we will have the same media used by the artist for the student to discover and create.  This week, we did Michelangelo and we discussed the style of painting he had done for the Sistine Chapel. They then went under the tables and used markers to create a picture.  Ask them about that.

We will be focusing on Spring and Easter this week and next.  We are talking describing, drawing and painting all kinds of ideas based on Spring.  In Religion we continue to work on OUR FATHER.  The children are learning to recite the prayer as well as sing it.  I hope we can lead the school when we do our chapel service in May. Tomorrow we will discuss Palm Sunday and next week we will go through Jesus' last week before his Crucifixion.

Some children continue to work on moving ahead in addition and writing.  Others are improving greatly on number identification and printing.  In Spanish we are working on our days of the week.  The children have a huge vocabulary list under their belts now.  They know 1-10, colors, days of the week, polite terms like please, thank you, hello, good bye, friend and several more.

When we return, we will be working on Qq and Rr as well as learning some new personal skills.  Some of the children will be learning their phone number and others will start working on writing their last names. Other personal skills will be zipping their coats and buttoning.  These are skills we would love for you to practice at home too!

Some fun things to do over break:
Visit your library to get a free museum pass! It is a big steal.
Oak Park Conservatory or Morton Arboretum to experience Nature
Wonderworks Museum in Oak Park PERFECT for kids 2-6!

Don't forget 1/2 day tomorrow, no school Friday
Spring Break begins at noon on 4/5.  Please send a note if your child will be out any additional days before or after break.

I wish you a blessed and joyful Easter.  I hope to hear you all had a splendid time with family and the children come back rested and ready to finish the year!

1 Peter 1:3
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead...

They say this is March??

Wow, this weather has been a blessing! On our field trip today, we were able to eat lunch on the lawn of the college! The kids not only had fun inside, but got to have a fun impromptu picnic as well.  We have been able to have more time to burn energy outside as well.

Our unit on the Solar System comes to an end today.  We have had 2 galactic weeks of awesome information.  The children really enjoyed this unit.  It was great that Venus and Jupiter were visible and that we experienced a full moon too. 2 apps I promised to share with parents are LIVE MOON and NIGHT SKY.  The first shows the visibility of the moon each day and you can spin it to see it change.  The Night Sky app shows what stars and planets are visible where you are standing. SUPER COOL!  They should all know the names of the planets and how they move in space.  They also learned about stars and constellations.  Ask them what orbit means, which planet is no longer a planet, which 2 planets are considered twins, which is the biggest, the hottest etc.

The letter Oo was introduced.  They were all excited because it is easy for them.  We continue to review our other letters up to date.  Our word wall is encouraging the constant use of new words. We will continue with O next week as well.

We have been learning the "Our Father".  I am very proud of how quickly they are learning it.  We will master it by Easter since it is such an important prayer.  Next week, we will continue talking about Jesus and his days before his death and resurrection.

Next week is our International Week.  We have a couple of parent volunteers coming to share information with us on China and Spain.  I will be covering Ireland, Italy and Mexico.  If anyone would like to join us to share some information about your nationality or part of your nationality, the children would love it.  Please send me an email and I can let you know what would be a good day/time.  We will be exploring maps, the globe, online "field trips" using the SmartBoard and we will be making maps.  It will be very exciting.

Lutheran Schools Week

My apologies for not updating last week.  We were just so busy and excited about our big week.  Dr. Seuss week was a great success.  We talked about authors, illustrators, rhyming, sorting, made up words and characters and so much more.  We even talked about publishers, so don't be surprised if you hear your child point to a Dr. Seuss logo on a book and refer to it as the publisher.  I will post photos soon.

We had fun with science goop last week.  GW and his dad and auntie did a great job.  It was fun to actually make a solid ball of the goop and watch it literally melt into a liquid before our eyes. This week we have science with JL.

We have been reading a lot of stories in the Bible as we get closer to Easter.  We have learned about Jesus being baptized, how he picked his followers, how he spoke to children and taught people about love.  This week we will be recapping Creation as we discuss the Solar System. Next week we will begin seriously learning The Lord's Prayer. I encourage you to practice this with them at night.

The Solar System will be our unit focus this week and next. We will talk about planets, stars, constellations and things that relate like telescopes, astronauts, astronomers etc.  They are super excited.  We have a full set of planets hanging from our room that are sized to scale.  Don't forget to hand in your child's field trip form or a note saying they will not be attending.  This is due this Thursday 3/8.

We have been doing a lot of small groups and individual work on reading, identifying etc.  We are now in the final months of school and you will see that many of the children are picking things up quicker now.  We are keeping up with them nicely.  Today we started syllables. They were extremely intrigued. You may hear them clapping words out.  Please encourage that.  It is not just fun, but it will help with sounding out! We continue to work on Nn.  Next week we will start Oo.

If you have any questions about what your child is working on or how they are doing, feel free to email me. Otherwise, we have conferences  in about 4 weeks.  I will show you portfolios and growth at that meeting.

Until then, many blessings to your family.
